Collaborate with your loved one and their friends and family to check everything off the list.
Use the text below to help navigate the conversation over the course of the next few weeks.
Make a copy of the Help the Helper Checklist and review the tasks, which correlate with the tasks on this page.
Customize the cells in your copy of the Google Sheet for the person you are helping: Delete rows that aren't relevant, add rows as needed, etc.
Call or text your loved one. Find out how they are doing. Share the Checklist with them, and ask them for phone numbers of their friends and family members who may want to help. Ask your loved how they want you to share information with them (for example: phone calls, text messages, emails, creating Google Docs, putting the information in the Google Sheet).
Call or text their friends and family members, and share this site and the Checklist with them. Ask them to indicate which tasks they want to take responsibility for by putting their name in Column C. Ask them to fill out Column D as well, so your loved one can keep track of all of the information that will be shared with them.
Complete the tasks in the Checklist in collaboration with your loved one and their friends and family. Use links in the checklist to navigate to resources.
If you have room in your home to accommodate them, you may want to offer that as an option.
If you do choose to do this:
Be clear about how long they can stay with you and how much space you have for them and their belongings.
Inform them of your bedtime and when you wake up in the mornings.
Know their plan (and backup plan) about where they will go afterward.
Accept any wear and tear on your house from their stay.
Be ready to hire a cleaning person after their stay; it removes the stress from both of you about the boundaries in your relationship.
Be willing to overlook their roommate etiquette during this stressful time.
Temporarily put your valuables in a safety deposit box so that there are no concerns about theft.
Keep track of all conversations and progress (dates, phone numbers, persons talked to, summaries, etc.).
If the home loss is covered by insurance, track extra mileage and additional expenses incurred.
Keep receipts for the additional expenses in the manila envelope.
